The Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (GIA) at II-UFRGS has a long standing tradition in research, being one of the first research groups of its kind to be created in Brazil. It is also one of Brazil's largest AI research groups, covering most areas of research and approaches to AI.

The group was created in the early 90's by Rosa Vicari. It is located in Porto Alegre, the capital of the southernmost state in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. It is a research group of the Informatics Institute at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.

GIA has as its main goal the development of theoretical and applied research of AI methods and techniques used in the most AI areas. The results of the researches are used in the development of systems focused in the following application areas:

  • Education
  • Oil and Gas Industry
  • Medicine
  • Internet
  • Traffic and Transportation
